September 26, 2005 Talkin’ Cotton
The unusually warm mid-September weather last week has really accelerated fiber development and much of the cotton is ready, or will soon be ready for harvest aid application. When we determined we would not get the heavy rains from the hurricane, many producers started applications over the weekend. Much of the mid-May planted cotton is ready or will be ready soon. We have already applied some harvest aid demonstrations and as usual, the Finish or other ethephon based materials plus Ginstar or Def have been working well. On some cotton that was already open, a conditioning rate of Gramoxone at 5.5 ounces per acre dropped most of the leaves. This will need to be followed by a higher rate of Gramoxone, or by Aim or ET to condition the crop for harvest. If any wheat in the area has emerged, be aware that Gramoxone drift will kill wheat. The Finish combinations have been working a couple of days quicker than Prep or Ethephon combinations. Cotton Quick plus Def or Ginstar has also been working well. On lush cotton the CottonQuick rate needs to be 4 pints with either 4-6 ounces of Ginstar, or 1 pint of Def. If morningglories are a problem, Finish at 1.5-2 pints plus 1 ounce of Aim should help dry the weeds down enough for picker harvest. If morningglory infestation is high or if the cotton will be stripper harvested, another 1 ounce shot of Aim at approximately 1 week following the first application will be needed. We should be seeing a lot of results by next week, so I can report on what is working well under current conditions.
