Weekly in-season Updates
|
INFORMATION |
April 25, 2005 Planting Time is Approaching We should be within two weeks of planting, three weeks in the northern areas. It is time to evaluate proper planting conditions and planting equipment. Today, we are in the middle of a cold front, not unusual for this time of year. We should not only wait until the soil temperature is at least 62 degrees at planting depth on mornings, but try to have a weather forecast that can ensure warm days for a week following planting. The most critical time for cold injury is during the seed swelling stage following planting. Many times cool soil conditions during this period will cause damage that will affect the seedling all during the season. The plant will be less vigorous, and it is likely that fruiting will initiate later. Emergence will take much longer, exposing the plant to damage by seedling diseases. The best time to check planting equipment is before you go to the field. Make sure planting units are lined up correctly, seed drop tubes are clear, and vacuum plates are not plugged. If granular in-furrow boxes will be used, make sure they are clear and properly calibrated. If any material was left in the boxes from last year, it will probably be like concrete in the bottom of the box. If this is not cleaned out, the impellers in the bottom of the box will be damaged. It always helps to hook up to the planter, lubricate chains and grease points, and make sure everything is working to eliminate some first day planting delays. |
